Robotics: Businesses to Welcome Chief Robotic Officers (CRO) to their Executive Staff

By Dick Weisinger

The commercial and industrial combined robotic market is on track to be worth more than $188 billion by 2020, according to IDC.  More than half of robots being deployed are in the discrete manufacturing sector.

John Santagate, research manager of supply chain at IDC Manufacturing Insights, said that “this growth is really fueled by a combination of technology improvements, expanded use cases, and acceptance in the market. Innovators in the field of robotics are delivering robots that can be used to perform a broader range of tasks, which is helping to drive the adoption of robotics into a wider base of industries.”

Top trends in the robotics industry that IDC predicts include:

  • Growth of “robot-as-a-service” business models
  • Enterprises that have chief robotics officers
  • More competitive robotic vendor marketplace
  • Insufficient number of people trained in robotics
  • Increased regulation specific to robotics for safety, security and privacy
  • Integration of robots with cloud-based software and apps
  • More robots developed to be able to collaborate with humans
  • Robots to increasing share information to collectively become smarter
  • Robots to be ever more present outside the factory, like in  logistics, health, utilities
  • Increased use of robotsin warehouses to supply e-commerce purchases
