Cloud Computing: Public Cloud Gains Momentum. Azure Stumbles.
Use of cloud computing has become the norm for most businesses. According to the Interop ITX 2016 State of Cloud Computing Survey, 70 percent of businesses are using SaaS, 57 percent are using IaaS, and 44 percent use PaaS.
15 percent of businesses said that three quarters or more of their IT services would be cloud based.
One major shift noted in the Interop report was the increased use of the public cloud, compared to private cloud environments. Use of the private cloud dropped from 52 percent to 40 percent. Carson Sweet, co-founder and CTO at CloudPassage, said that “I believe we’ll see public cloud adoption hit mainstream.”
The reasons why people are adopting the public cloud include:
- Scalability
- Performance
- Faster access to technology updates
One surprise from the report was the change in market share between Google and Microsoft. The report showed Google’s share increase from 23 percent to 38 percent and Microsoft Azure declined from 48 percent to 38 percent. Amazon’s AWS had a 52 percent market share in the report. Because some users had multiple cloud services, the totals didn’t sum to 100 percent.
