Citizen Data Scientists: Vendors Introduce Automation and Self Service Tools to Fill Skills Gap
A lack of skilled talent in areas like big data and analytics means that increasingly people with different background sets are stepping up to take on applying data to business problems. Gartner calls these people who aren’t formally trained in statistics and analytics as ‘citizen data scientists‘.
Gartner predicts that by 2019 there will be more citizen data scientists working for businesses than formally trained data scientists.
Vendors are also well aware of the skills gap and are developing tools and applications that are more fully automated and self service. Gartner predicts that by 2020 40 percent of all analytics tools will be fully automated.
Alexander Linden, research vice president at Gartner, said that “making data science products easier for citizen data scientists to use will increase vendors’ reach across the enterprise as well as help overcome the skills gap. The key to simplicity is the automation of tasks that are repetitive, manual intensive and don’t require deep data science expertise.”
Joao Tapadinhas, research director at Gartner, said that “most organisations don’t have enough data scientists consistently available throughout the business, but they do have plenty of skilled information analysts that could become citizen data scientists.”
But there are some concerns with recruiting staff to work on data science problems that haven’t been properly trained. Possible issues include:
- Weak background in data analytics
- Introduce more risks involving data compliance, security and privacy
- Data interpretation may not align with business goals
