Cloud Computing: Public Cloud Overtaking Private Clouds in Enterprises

By Dick Weisinger

The 2017 survey on Cloud Computing by RightScale found that cloud computing has become the norm across most enterprise.  95 percent of organizations are using at least one cloud and 85 percent are using more than one.  The average business now runs the majority of its production apps in the cloud.

  • Private and Hybrid cloud usage is slowly slipping in favor of the public cloud
  • 41 percent of businesses had production workloads on the public cloud versus 38 percent running in a private cloud
  • On average, enterprise cloud users accessed data in 1.8 public clouds and 2.3 private clouds
  • Business units are increasingly likely to bypass IT in making decisions about selecting cloud apps and services

Cloud Type Usage — From Datamation

The RightScale report found “that while hybrid cloud remains the preferred enterprise strategy, public cloud adoption is growing while private cloud adoption flattened and fewer companies are prioritizing building a private cloud. This was a change from last year’s survey, where we saw strong gains in private cloud use.”
