Data Migration: A Painful Necessity When Adopting a New System
Shiny new technology, particularly new SaaS cloud-based apps, is driving organizations to migrate their data from legacy software. The road to the new application is proving to be bumpy though for many of those organizations.
A report from Vision Solutions found that failed migrations are becoming a common occurrence. Slightly more than half of IT managers interviewed admitted overseeing a failed migration project in 2016.
Large companies are more likely to fail — 60 percent versus 44 percent for small to mid-sized companies. Larger companies more likely have more data and more complex systems that might account for the disparity. But the biggest issues that organizations complain about are the need for their staff to work overtime and for the downtime users experience during the period of migration. 83 percent of migrations involved some amount of downtime.
The report concludes “that the root causes of failed migration are likely poor, unrealistic planning and goal setting, and faulty testing procedures. While inadequate tools might account for some of these migration failures, it’s clear that the human factor – including training and planning – plays a vital role. Organizations need to plan better, test earlier, and have access to a migration tool that enables continuous uptime during migration.”
