Content Management: CMIS to Squash Content Connector Market
CMSWire recently asked the question: Will CMIS stifle and eventually kill the Content Connector Market? CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) is a standards proposal based on Web services for sharing information among disparate content repositories that seeks to ensure interoperability for people and applications using multiple content repositories.
One of the benefits of CMIS is that it is designed to work over existing repositories enabling customers to build and leverage applications against multiple repositories. That’s the same kind of benefit that vendors like EntropySoft, Day, Mark Logic and Mainsoft have been offering with products that can connect to and between major document/content repositories. These vendors are selling to a part of ECM known as the connector market.
But CMIS isn’t going to put these vendors out of business. CMIS provides fairly basic-level access capabilities to repositories. Accessing very specialized functionality is beyond the scope of what is currently scoped for the specification. And CMIS doesn’t reach at all into the realm of Web Content Management or Records Management.
And it’s also a question of how CMIS will shake out in the market. The hype has been high, but the number of repository vendors who have opened up a CMIS interface to their data is still pretty small.
