Storage: Robust Data Growth But Limited Budgets

By Dick Weisinger

Storage requirements are growing fast, but budgets to address the management of that data are flat or declining.   A fourth quarter 2008 survey of 100 European IT managers found that 66 percent indicated their budgets are the same or will decline in 2009.  But 73 percent of these IT managers predicted increased storage capacity needs exceeding 30 percent per year.  48 percent of those responding said that storage accounted for more than 20 percent of their budget.

Other findings included:

  • 59 percent said that the growth of unstructured data exceeds that of any other structured data
  • 55 percent saw primary storage as the area that is experiencing the fastest growth
  • 68 percent were developing a “Green IT” strategy
  • 94 percent consider “Green IT”to be directly linked to energy cost savings and an environmentally friendly strategy
