Security: Is Your Data Safe? Data Breaches Reach All Time High

By Dick Weisinger

Do you think your data is secure? Recent statistics may lead you to believe there is almost no point in trying to secure your data because if someone really want to see it it’s likely that there is a way.

A report by Gemalto found that every second 122 records are being exposed globally by data breaches, which equates to about 10 million data records being lost every day.  Just during the first six months of 2017, and not including the lost data by Equifax, 1.9 billion data records were exposed this year, an increase of 164 percent compared to the first half of 2016.

Jason Hart, vice president and CTO for data protection at Gemalto, said that “it blows me away at this moment that every single day, more than 10 million pieces of data are exposed.”

Among industries, health care has seen the largest number of breaches in 2017, about one-quarter of all breaches, and education has seen the largest increase, a 103 percent increase over the number of breaches in 2016.
