Cloud Computing: Departments Unify Around Cloud-Based Apps

By Dick Weisinger

Is cloud computing driving increased complexity by creating many departmental silos of data across companies, or is cloud computing bringing teams together, enabling easy central access to computing both internal and external to the business?

An MIT Technology report, sponsored by Oracle, reports that overall cloud computing is actually uniting business departments.  In particular, the report finds that there is synergy when both finance and HR share usage of cloud applications. Nearly half of those businesses interviewed for the report say that joint finance-HR cloud applications help promote better collaboration among departments.

Brent Skinner, a principal analyst with Nucleus Research, said that “if you have fewer data sets running in the background, you have closer to real-time visibility across a system. When you have systems that are operating individually, unaware of each other or unconnected, the accounting department can’t see into the payroll function, finance can’t see into the supply chain management or omnichannel environment in marketing. Disconnected systems can result in a company processing payroll before budget constraints make it through, for example, which can lead to a range of holdups and mistakes.”

Swami Natarajan, SAAS sales development and strategy leader at Oracle, said that “improved collaboration between departments enables organisations to manage the changes ahead and sets the blueprint for the rest of the organisation’s cloud shift.”
