Storage: SMEs Most Affected By Storage
You’d think that storage capacity problems are more serious at larger companies than small, but actually SMEs are now struggling the most. That’s the conclusion of a NetApp study of companies in India. The theory is that small and medium companies, in an effort to be competitive in a difficult economy, are adopting IT tools like ERP and Business Intelligence to help streamline their operations.
The trouble is that the new efficiency means that they’re collecting huge amounts of data and now need to store it somewhere. SMEs are basically swimming in data and trying to find a way to store it all.
Big storage increases are being seen by organizations with less than 500 GB of data. And the sharpest growth is happening in organizations with 6-10 terabytes of data. The increased storage also is bringing with it challenges for keeping it online 24×7 and managing security policies. IT is feeling the brunt of the misery. Increased backups and application maintenance is stressing IT.
The report finds that large and small companies are seeing different types of storage problems. For large companies, unstructured data is the number one problem, but smaller organizations are having the most problem now handling email and structured data
from applications like ERP.
