Digital Transformation and CIOs: 2018 Focus Priorities on Customer Engagement and Data Monetization
For Digital Transformation to succeed in businesses there needs to be an executive that leads the way. Typically the CIO is that person. IDC recently made a forecast for the progress that CIOs will make over this and the next few years in realizing digital transformation in their organizations.
In a somewhat jargon-packed statement announcing the IDC results for their CIO predictions in 2018, Serge Findling, vice president of Research for IDC’s IT, said that “for CIOs and senior information and technology (IT) executives, the challenge is to think and operate like a digital-native enterprise in the face of the emergence of platforms, innovation accelerators, machine learning, augmented skills, micro-personalization, new partnerships, and new relationships. At the same time, change continues to move from linear to exponential and from evolving to episodic and unpredictable — requiring businesses to build digitally fueled adaptive processes, decision-making, and technology platforms to survive, let alone thrive.”
Some of IDC’s predictions include:
- This year, three-quarters of CIOs have experiential engagement and data monetization at the top of their priority list
- Over the next two years, digital transformation will often fail because of ineffective technology innovation, underfunding, and issues transitioning to the cloud
- By 2020, 60 percent of CIOs will have convinced their business of the importance of being a digital business leader
- By 2019, 60 percent of CIOs will have positioned their business with the cloud, mobile and devops to be able to achieve digital transformation
- By 2019, 60 percent of CIOs will be using digital models for customer and ecosystem-facing business
- By 2019, 75 percent of CIOs will refocus cybersecurity around authentication and trust
