Cloud Computing: Spending on Cloud Services Exceeds Cloud Software and Hardware Spending

By Dick Weisinger

Annual spending on cloud services, software and hardware grew 24 percent and reached $180 billion in 2017, according to Synergy Research Group.  Cloud services in particular are growing strongly.  IaaS and PaaS grew at a rate of 47 percent and SaaS services grew at s 31 percent annual rate.

Spending on cloud services for the first time exceeded the amount of spending on hardware and software in 2017, and the gap between the two grew even larger in 2017.

John Dinsdale, a Chief Analyst at Synergy Research Group, said that “major barriers to cloud adoption are now almost a thing of the past, with previously perceived weaknesses such as security now often seen as strengths. Cloud technologies are now generating massive revenues for cloud service providers and technology vendors and we forecast that current market growth rates will decline only slowly over the next five years.”
