Storage: Breakthroughs in Magnetism May Enable Creation of Smaller, Denser and more Efficient Magnetic Storage Devices
Advances in our understanding of magnetism may mean that we are close to a number of breakthroughs in improving the capabilities of magnetic storage. Some of these were recently summarized by Patrick Nelson at Network World.
At Tulane University, a new type of material called a Dirac semimetal has been created. The material is able to persist state with spins that can be made parallel to each other. The material also allows electrons to flow with near zero mass and close to the speed of light. These properties make this new kind of material a good candidate when building next-generation powerful computers. Quantum devices have been limited primarily to materials kept near absolute zero, but use of a Dirac semimetal may change that.
Research at the University of Exeter found a type of material that can be locally heated to cause a change in the directed motion of magnetization. The discovery may make it more practical to create nanoscale devices, like nanometers, actuators and sensors.
At the University of Cambridge, materials that act like 3D magnets rather than standard two-dimensional one can significantly change the way that magnetic devices store and move information. Amalio Fernández-Pacheco, principal investigator of the project at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, said that “it’s the development of a completely new generation of magnetic devices. The material can store move and process information in a very efficient way by exploiting the three dimensions of space.”
