User Interfaces: Voice is Expected to Be Important Factor in Enterprise Apps

By Dick Weisinger

Voice user interfaces are appearing everywhere in consumer products.  These include Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Asssistant, Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri. Voice is increasingly being used.  For example, Google voice search queries have grown by 35 times since 2008 and 7 times since 2010.  In 2015, 65 percent of all mobile search was already with voice.

It is only a matter of time before we can expect enterprise applications to also accept voice control.  In certain environments, especially those that require workers to have hands-free access to data, voice-based applications are sure to be used.

Ben Bajarin of Creative Strategies said that “the voice-user interface has gone mainstream. What’s more, mainstream consumers seem to recognize its value and convenience. … It is encouraging, from a sentiment perspective, that voice looks to be a natural extension of our keyboard/mouse/touch-based input and output methods. Consumers seem to recognize its value, and want it to work in more ways.”

Al Lindsay, VP  of Alexa Engine at Amazon.com, said that “it’s natural to think there will be an extension to enterprise environments where the Echo or Alexa will play a role.”
