Open Source: Open Source Leader — Oracle?

By Dick Weisinger

The Oracle acquisition of Sun is still in progress, and Sun continues to push the Open Source mantra.  The day after the acquisition announcement, Sun signed an agreement with China’s State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and agreed to set up courses on “open source” technology throughout China’s colleges and companies.

It will be interesting to see if Oracle will continue to push the Open Source model as much as Sun has.  With Oracle taking control of Java, MySQL and OpenOffice, Oracle now becomes a key player in Open Source and is also one of the largest software companies.  Microsoft, SAP and IBM are now probably all recalculating the dynamics of the software playing field.
