Augmented Reality: AR and VR to Improve Engineering and Product Development

By Dick Weisinger

20 percent of enterprises will be using Augmented Reality within their operations by 2019, according to a forecast by Gartner.

Lumus Vision predicts that by 2025 the use of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality market within the engineering sector will reach $4.7 billion.

Consider how Augmented Reality could be applied within the manufacturing sector.  AR can be applied to bring more value to technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics.  Prototyping and testing visualization with AR can speed the development of new products.  AR will enable humans to be able to better interface with machines and to more quickly interpret information.

Brian Blau, research vice president at Garner, said that “business use cases are broad. In coming years, field service workers, those who maintain utilities, infrastructure, machines and equipment, will benefit because their work is often ‘hands-busy’ tasks. An AR headset can provide visual overlays of diagrams, complex instructions, event recording or enable see-what-I-see remote collaboration. Using AR can improve workforce productivity by removing time-wasting behaviors or improving the efficiency of tasks.”
