Blockchain: Adoption Weak; Businesses Stall Because the Technology will Bring Disruption and Re-engineering
Blockchain has managed to seize the attention from many industries, but that doesn’t mean that many of them are doing anything with it. A recent survey of businesses by Gartner found that less than one percent of them indicated that they were actively using it and just eight percent said that they were experimenting with it. 77 percent said that they are simply not interested in it.
Why? Part of the reason seems to be that blockchain may be just too disruptive. Adoption of blockchain requries big changes and shifts from the way that businesses are traditionally operated, and businesses see dangers in re-engineering their current ways of doing business.
David Furlonger, Vice President at Gartner, said that “the challenge for CIOs is not just finding and retaining qualified engineers, but finding enough to accommodate growth in resources as blockchain developments grow. Qualified engineers may be cautious due to the historically libertarian and maverick nature of the blockchain developer community. While many industries indicate an initial interest in blockchain initiatives, it remains to be seen whether they will accept decentralized, distributed, tokenized networks, or stall as they try to introduce blockchain into legacy value streams and systems.”
