Tech Suppliers for the Cloud: Time to Take a Breath

By Dick Weisinger

Financial forecasts from hardware suppliers for cloud vendors hint slowing growth for the cloud, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Some of the near-term challenges for ever-expanding cloud growth include the following:

  • Reports from memory chip manufacturers, like Western Digital, that there is currently an oversupply of memory chips
  • Trade with China may slow down the economy and international sales
  • Volatility in the foreign exchange market

Executives in the chip and hardware business agree that cloud growth will need to take at least occasional breaks.

Bob Swan, Intel Chief Executive Officer, commented at the end of the third quarter in late October, that “I don’t expect that it will grow at fifty percent forever. Fifty percent was our cloud growth in the quarter.”
