Cognitive Manufacturing: Improving Efficiency and Productivity while Reducing Costs

New technologies are being applied to decades-old manufacturing processes to improve business metrics like productivity, quality, reliability, safety and yield. The combination of cognitive computing, Industrial IoT and analytics is being called ‘Cognitive Computing’. IBM, in particular, has adopted the term in their marketing and solution focus.

Jiani Zhang, director of Watson IoT at IBM, wrote that “cognitive manufacturing fully uses the data across systems, equipment and processes to derive actionable insights across the entire value chain from design through manufacture to support. Built on the foundations of IoT and employing analytics combined with cognitive technology, cognitive manufacturing drives at key productivity improvements in quality, efficiency, and reliability of the manufacturing environment.”

Four sweet-spot application areas for cognitive manufacturing are:

  • Asset Performance Improvement – squeezing better performance from equipment by making it more reliable and predictable.
  • Process Improvement – Optimizing productivity and yield of manufacturing.
  • Resource Optimization – Improve energy efficiency and productivity while reducing costs.
  • Supply Chain Optimization – Build a dynamic supply chain that accelerates innovation
