Storage: Unstructured Data Swamps Storage Administrators

By Dick Weisinger

IDC reports that 75% of new data being stored on new dick storage capacity is unstructured data.  That’s consistent with the 80% figure that’s often cited by AIIM and other vendors. And when coupled with an expected annual growth rate of 60% for unstructured data, there is a lot of new information being created and stored.

The huge growth is in part fueled by digital content, compliance and data retention rules, and users who are unwilling to delete any of their data.  The challenge related to managing all the new data is complicated by the fact that IT budgets are declining.

The steps for creating an unstructured data storage strategy consist of the following:

  • Identify the types of unstructured content to be stored
  • Develop a taxonomy or data storage hierarchy for maintaining the unstructured data
  • Define data security and privacy rights based on access control lists
  • Define the Business Process Controls (reviews and approvals)
  • Determine backup policies (how frequently).
  • Determine archival policies (how frequently and for how long).
  • Migration policies determine (how frequently and which storage tiers are involved).
  • Determine data mining or text analytics requirements
