Security: Black Hats Use AI to Weaponize Cyberattacks
The security industry has cheered new AI-based tools and techniques that will help them more effectively protect IT systems from malicious hacking.
Koos Lodewijkx, vice president and chief technology officer at IBM Security, said “Is AI a silver bullet? Absolutely not. But, it’s a new tool in our toolbox. We want to use AI to do all the investigative work and essentially give the analyst a researched case.
The problem is that the new technology is open to anyone. In classic spy-versus-spy one-upmanship, hackers have access to the same high tech tools and are adopting AI techniques to defeat security measures. It is destined to become a battle of AI versus AI.
Lee Kim, Director of Privacy & Security at HIMSS, said that “AI is a dual-use technology that can be deployed defensively or offensively. There are malicious uses of AI. The malicious use of AI will impact how we construct and manage our digital infrastructure as well as how we design and distribute AI systems, and will likely require policy and other institutional responses.”
Brian Wallace, Security Data Scientist, said that “hackers have been using artificial intelligence as a weapon for quite some time. It makes total sense because hackers have a problem of scale, trying to attack as many people as they can, hitting as many targets as possible, and all the while trying to reduce risks to themselves. Artificial intelligence, and machine learning in particular, are perfect tools to be using on their end.”
