Cloud Computing: High Energy Costs Increase Interest
There are many benefits of cloud computing that include:
– Controlled/Reduced Cost — scale up or scale down / pay as you go
– Frequent automated software updates
– Mobility — information can be accessed on the road or on your desk
But now another factor is working in favor of cloud computing: sky-rocketing energy costs. Increasing energy costs of on-premise IT hardware is impacting the bottom lines of many companies. And that is a plus for cloud computing. Dr. Jonathan Koomey at Stanford University says that cloud computing is a much more efficient model in terms of energy utilization.
Koomey said that “Half of the total cost of these facilities [data centers] is cooling and power distribution. This wasn’t true 10 or 15 years ago. The implication is the need to have larger centralized facilities to take this cost. This gives the advantage to people doing cloud computing, making it more economically viable to do computation within the cloud instead of your own data centre.”
The benefits of cloud computing that Koomey sees are:
– Cost per computation is less when spread over more users
– Servers are better utilized
– Hardware and Energy costs are centrally managed by the cloud vendor
