HealthCare: Flow from the Stimulus Spigot
The federal stimulus spending program has allocated $20 billion towards IT health spending. While those dollars aren’t supposed to actually start being spent until 2011, companies in Healthcare have seen an increase in their IT spending in 2009 compared to 2008. InformationWeek, in a survey of company IT spending, found that HealthCare far and away is the leading industry in new IT spending.
The breakdown in how HealthCare IT dollars are being spent is 30% going towards new initiatives and 70% towards ongoing IT operations. As many as 52 percent of companies are seeing new IT-led initiatives being rolled out in 2009. High on the list of the new application areas are collaboration applications that typically include wikis and blogs.
Fifty-four percent surveyed said that collaborative apps are their most effective tools in boosting productivity. The second most effective type of app is business intelligence.
As even more dollars will likely flow into HealthCare in the next couple of years, it will be interesting to see the breakdown of future spending.
