Augmented Intelligence: Getting Humans to Work More Effectively with Machines

By Dick Weisinger

AI usually refers to Artificial Intelligence. But some are saying that a different AI, Augmented Intelligence, is likely to be as important or possibly more important.

The goal of Artificial Intelligence is to create machines that mimic human intelligence. This includes the ability to understand speech, to learn, and to reason. Augmented Intelligence aims to create systems that improve the ability of humans and machines to more effectively work together.

Murray Brozinsky, chief strategy officer of Conversa, said that “when a computer makes a decision – all the way down it’s computational. But when a human makes a choice, to make the right choice you need to know what matters and why it matters. And that’s the real distinction between human and machine and where they can collaborate. There are studies now that show human plus machine outperform both human and machine alone.”

Gartner says that within two years that artificial intelligence augmentation will create $2.9 trillion of business value and 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity globally.

Svetlana Sicular, research vice president at Gartner, said that “the excitement about AI tools, services and algorithms misses a crucial point: The goal of AI should be to empower humans to be better, smarter and happier, not to create a ‘machine world’ for its own sake. Augmented intelligence is a design approach to winning with AI, and it assists machines and people alike to perform at their best.”
