If you’re still undecided about Open Source, there’s a new study with yet more positive data that might convince you to give it a try.  The study was commissioned by the US Department of Homeland Security.  Open Source is of great interest to the government because increasingly government agencies are using open source software.

Homeland Security worked with the company Coverity to analyze more than 60 million lines of unique code from 280 open source projects like Firefox, Linux and PHP.  This is the third year of the report, and the results show that overall code quality is improving.  The analysis identified 38,453 defects, the open source projects were alerted of these problems, and 11,246 defects were fixed.  The ‘defect density’ overall of all open source code analyzed averages now one defect per 4000 lines of code.

Quality improvement is good news for the backers of Open Source.  These kind of results are sure to continue the trend towards increasing open source adoption.
