Enterprise IT: It’s not Getting Easier — Complexity on the Horizon.

By Dick Weisinger

Technology is getting smarter. Things like AI and cloud computing are offloading tasks that require arcane IT skills to maintain and letting businesses focus more on solving business problems. IT should be getting simpler and easier.

Not so, according to a recent report by IDC sponsored by Cisco. The report sees growing complexity on the horizon for IT in many companies — “unprecedented management complexity.” The report forecasts that business’s addiction to technology will grow and that over the next two years organizations will double the number of applications that they use.

The IT landscape is evolving to one based on modular design, microservices, containers, cloud-native applications, IoT and edge applications. Getting all those applications and services to work together will be challenging.

The report found that “cloud architects and application owners will have to increasingly consider governance models that best fit their requirements for performance, risk management and agility. This work will involve aligning development teams, IT ops professionals, security teams, key stakeholders and executives around a core set of standardized processes and workflows.”
