Content Management: "Ready to Explode"
Growth in the content management market is poised to explode according to a market analysis report from Basex. The report Content Management Systems: The New Math for Selecting Your Platform was published in September 2009. Basex estimates content management sales in 2008 to be $4.1 billion, and they expect that number to climb to $10 billion by 2014.
While the report cites healthy growth at commercial vendors like Autonomy, Open Text, Fatwire and Day, the report also points to Open Source software in the space as being one of the main drivers behind the rapid growth in CMS. Basex mentions Alfresco as a leader among Open Source CMS vendors. Other Open Source CMS solutions mentioned in the Basex report include Joomla!, Drupal, Plone, Bluenog, Nuxeo and Acquia. DotNetNuke and eZPublish while not mentioned are other players of importance in Open Source CMS.
The sheer number of CMS vendors and the variety of features and options from any one vendor makes selecting and specifying any CM system
extremely challenging. Basex emphasizes the importance of getting the right system for your organization. And the complexity of CMS makes it a favorite target for analyst reports. The Basex report is just one of many analyst reports on CMS and ECM. Other analysts like CMSWatch, Gartner and Forrester also evaluate and classify the vendors in the market, and those reports are more well-known than the one from Basex. Studying these vendor/product reports is a great way to research the various CMS options. But if you don’t have the right skills or the time to do an adequate investigation, it is probably worth the money to bring in a consultant on a short-term basis to analyze your situation, and to then evaluate and recommend a CMS solution that best fits your organization.
