Enterprise Architecture: 10 Mistakes to Avoid
Gartner reseach has released an interesting report that details the top 10 mistakes made by companies on their enterprise architecture projects. Of those 10 mistakes almost all of them center around problems with communicating effectively and building good relationships within and outside of the architecture team.
Often the most important factor for success is the selection of the right lead architect for the group. While the report doesn’t recommend choosing someone totally non-technical for that slot, it emphasizes that soft people skills are often more important for the lead architect role than technical ones.
R. Scott Bittler, vice president of Gartner’s IT Research, said that “we find folks come looking for best practices, but … I am saying ‘Hey, take care of avoiding the fundamental pitfalls before you go after some of the upper reaches of the fruit on the tree.’ It’s a lot easier to avoid the pitfall than to climb out of the bloody hole.”
The top 10 enterprise architecture mistakes to avoid are:
1. Selecting the wrong person for the lead architect role
2. Insufficient stakeholder understanding and support
3. Not engaging the business people
4. Doing only technical domain-level architecture
5. Doing current-state enterprise architecture first
6. The enterprise architecture group does most of the architecting
7. Not measuring and not communicating the impact
8. Architecting the “boxes” only
9. Not establishing effective enterprise architecture governance early
10. Not spending enough time on communication
