Automation: Jobs of All Categories to be Affected

By Dick Weisinger

Automation is both destroying and creating jobs, according to a report by Forrester. One million knowledge worker jobs are expected to be replaced by automation which includes RPA, software robotics, virtual agents and chatbots and machine learning. 300,000 jobs are expected to be created, those that require intuition, empathy, mental agility and cross-domain knowledge, like workers, teachers and explainers.

A study by Stanford economist Michael Webb for the Brookings Institution found that jobs of all categories will be affected by automation. That includes jobs not only in manufacturing but also those classified as ‘knowledge work’.

The Brookings study considered what areas AI research is currently being done. Automation facilitated by AI may result in completely automating some jobs, but in other cases will provide tools that extend and enhance the structure of the current job, and may even potentially result in the creation new jobs.

The study found that the more education and training required for jobs, the more likely that the job will be exposed to Artificial Intelligence. For example, holders of bachelor’s degrees are expected to be more than five times exposed to AI as people with only a high school degree.
