RPA + AI: Taking Robotic Automation to the Next Level
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the automation of human tasks. An example of RPA is the automation of the work performed by a data entry operator, for example, recognizing the handwriting on scanned images of application forms and then automatically populating that data into a database. Accenture says that processing costs can be reduced up to 80 percent by using RPA.
RPA is increasingly used by businesses and is expected to grow annually at 40 percent, reaching a $16 billion market by 2024, according to Gartner.
RPA usually consists of rules that are applied over and over to perform repetitive work. RPA can be taken to the next level by augmenting it with AI, something that people are calling “Intelligent Automation”.
Where RPA is usually a set of pre-defined rules to define the work, with AI, the software robots can learn how to process something and improve the process. By combining RPA with AI, certain tasks that were beyond the scope of pure RPA previously become more doable, and processes can be performed more productively that previously.
