AI Chips: It’s No Longer a Market of One — Nvidia

Nvidia and Intel have long had a stranglehold on the chip market. Companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft and other have relied on chips from those companies to power their businesses. But those tech companies are all now trying to build their own special-purpose chips.

The chip business in 2018 was more than $460 billion, according to Gartner.  The exponential growth in the use AI is driving tech businesses and venture startups to invest significantly in the development of specialized AI chip development.  In January 2018, the New York Times reported that there were more than 45 startup companies specializing in AI chips.

Big tech investment in AI chip development include the following:

  • Intel purchased AI chip startups Nervana and Movidius.
  • Microsoft is developing its own AI chipset for the HoloLens VR/AR
  • Google has the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for the Google Cloud
  • Amazon is building an AI chip for Alexa
  • Apple is working on an AI chip for Siri and FaceID
  • Tesla is working on AI chips for their cars
