AI Ethics: Ethical Issues Cause Worry About Artificial Intelligence

By Dick Weisinger

Massive archives of data collected by tech businesses and governments worry many that new technologies will steal or privacy and limit control on our lives.  Tech leaders like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking warn that not properly managed, technologies like artificial intelligence and robots can lead to nightmare scenarios.

Musk said that “if AI has a goal and humanity just happens to be in the way, it will destroy humanity as a matter of course without even thinking about it. No hard feelings.”

But the worry is not just about the destruction of humanity. The rise of AI and robotics bring with it additional problems, as cited by the World Economic Forum.  Some of the problems include:

  • Unemployment from job displacement
  • Income inequality
  • How will machines affect how people interact?
  • How do we prevent machines from being fooled?

Julian David, chief executive of TechUK, said that “Accountability is key. The people behind the AI must be accountable. That is why we need to think very carefully before we give machines a legal identity. Businesses that genuinely want to do good and be trustworthy will need to pay much more attention to ethics.”
