Artificial Intelligence: DARPA Pledges Funds for Emerging Technologies

By Dick Weisinger

The US Department of Defense has announced plans to emphasize spending on emerging technology over the next five years, especially on artificial intelligence.  The plan calls for $1.7 billion to be set aside for Joint Artificial Intelligence Center.

The Artificial Intelligence Exploration program includes plans to promote “third wave” AI development, AI algorithms that can not only make decisions but which can also summarize the reasons why the decision was made.

In the past, Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA) , has funded “first wave” (rule based) and “second wave” (statistical learning) AI technologies.  DARPA funding was behind a number of important early AI successes.

Peter Highnam, DARPA Deputy, said that “DARPA has established a streamlined process to push the state of the art in AI through regular and relatively short-term technology development projects. The intent is to get researchers on contract quickly to test the value and feasibility of innovative concepts. Where we’re successful, individual projects could lead to larger research and development programs spurring major AI breakthroughs.”
