Artificial Intelligence: Some Worry about Job Displacement by AI, Others See Big Opportunity

By Dick Weisinger

The general public in the US has been satisfied with their understanding of Artificial Intelligence.  About four fifths say that they have a positive opinion of Artificial Intelligence, according to a poll by Gallup.  But there is a worry too.  Three quarters say that AI is going to eliminate more jobs than it will create, and that this will result in an even greater disparity of high wage earners and low ones.

People displaced from their current jobs worry that they’ll be able to get the proper training or education to be able to advance to a new career.  The Gallup poll found that only 18 percent felt confident that they’d be able to get a comparable job should their job be displaced.

Matthew Sigelman, CEO of Burning Glass Technologies, said on a panel at Northeastern University that “if our frame of debate is around job stability, then AI is a deep threat. It is replacing human activity in a whole array of jobs and in some cases the majority of certain kinds of jobs. But if our frame of discussion is around job or career mobility, AI is a tool that can unlock a huge amount of opportunity.”
