Artificial Intelligence: Wide Rollout of AI, but Mainly for Select Use Cases

By Dick Weisinger

Businesses have adopted AI in a big way. A survey by MIT Technology Review found that 97 percent of large companies have deployed already AI in some way. By 2022, companies about one-third of all business processes will include AI capabilities. AI is being adopted particularly quickly in the areas of financial services, manufacturers, and technology businesses.

One difficulty in adopting AI is how to decide which use cases can it best be applied to. AI is broad and could be applied to a lot of different areas, but it can also be expensive and complex. Rather than a scattershot approach, many companies think it’s better to apply AI in a more focused way with a view towards ROI.

Mike Hanrahan, CEO of Walmart’s Intelligent Research Lab, said that “the first thing we had to invest time in was deciding where we should focus our resources. It came down to deciding which cases were the most practical to scale.”

The current most common use cases where AI is deployed include: Quality Control, Customer Care and Fraud Detection.
