Augmented Reality: Bigger than AI in Impact and Disruption?

By Dick Weisinger

While the headlines continue to hype AI as the current technology trend, a recent survey of businesses found that a bigger and potentially more disruptive technology is Augmented Reality (AR).

While the results don’t seem right, since AR news and information tend to be background noise to much of the excitement around AI. The survey was conducted by GlobalData of businesses and asked them to rank the impact that emerging technologies like AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing, IoT, blockchain, 5G, and Augmented Reality have on their businesses. AR ranked as the most disruptive technology — picked as number one by 70 percent of businesses across 30 different business sectors.

Filipe Oliveira, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, said that “this change in how people see AR will likely be long term, and not just a temporary blip. It is clear that people are warming towards the technology, even if they don’t believe that it will make a big difference tomorrow.”

Michael Porter, professor at Harvard Business School, and James Heppelmann, CEO at PTC, wrote in a Harvard Business Review article that “while the advances in artificial intelligence and robotics are impressive, we believe that combining the capabilities of machines with humans’ distinctive strengths will lead to far greater productivity and more value creation than either could generate alone. What’s needed to realize this opportunity is a powerful human interface that bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds. AR enables people to better tap into the digital revolution and all it has to offer.”
