Augmented Reality: Enhancing our View of the World

By Dick Weisinger

Augmented Reality (AR) is digital data that superimposes a user’s view of real-world objects. It is technology that enhances the things that we see, hear and feel.

Spending on Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality will reach $160 billion by 2023, according to estimates by IDC. Production of AR headsets is increasing 141 percent annual, and is expected to reach 32 million units in 2023.

Marcus Torchia, IDC’s research director for Customer Insights & Analysis , said that “augmented reality is gaining share in the commercial market due to its ability to facilitate tasks, provide access to resources, and solve complex problems.”

Just a few examples of AR applications include:

Healthcare – Visualization assistance for physicians in surgeries.

People with disabilities – Translation of environmental data. Visual information can be converted to audio, or audio can be converted to visual.

Educational – Students can visualize and interact with objects to understand the topics that they’re studying.

Equipment Maintenance and Repair – Augmented visuals to help diagnose and then explain the step-by-step repair of equipment.

Museums – Artwork will be augmented to enhance the experience of the museum visitors.

Mike Elgan, journalist for InsiderPro, writes that “as the prices come down, the dam will burst and AR will become a runaway platform just like smartphones were 10 years ago.”
