Big Data: Businesses See Value in Big Data but Still Uncertain in How Best to Apply It

By Dick Weisinger

Businesses that have adopted Big Data report being able to see the benefits.  23 percent say that they are more efficient.  16 percent are better able to make business decisions.  Another 16 percent say that the use of Big Data has enabled them to improve their customer experience and engagement, and 11 percent say that they’ve been able to measure financial savings as a result.  Those are the results of a survey by DNV GL.

  • Three-quarters of organizations are maintaining or increasing their investment in Big Data over the next two to three years
  • Half of enterprises see Big Data as an opportunity while only 4.5 percent say they feel threatened by it
  • Only one quarter of organizations say that they have a clear plan for how they can use Big Data to their advantage

Luca Crisciotti, CEO of DNV GL, said that “Big Data is changing the game in a number of industries, representing new opportunities and challenges. I believe that companies that recognize and implement strategies and plans to leverage the information in their data pools have increased opportunities to become more efficient and meet their market and stakeholders better.  The ability to use data to obtain actionable knowledge and insights is inevitable for companies that want to keep growing and profiting.  The data analyst or scientist will be crucial in most organizations in the near future.”
