Business IT: Business Units Up Their Role in Technology Decisions

By Dick Weisinger

Increasingly business units other than IT are playing a bigger role in the purchasing of technology and services. Finance, sales and marketing, engineering, and logistics now often independently procure IT services.

A report by CompTIA found that 45 percent of tech ideas originated from business units, rather that from within IT, and more than a quarter of final decisions on IT spending are made by non-IT departments.

Andrew Bartels,  analyst at Forrester Research, said that “The growing tech-savviness of business leaders and the wider availability of cloud solutions does mean that business leaders are playing a bigger role in the front end of this process.”

Similarly, Carolyn April, senior director at CompTIA, said that “CIOs and information technology (IT) teams remain involved in the process, as their expertise and experience are valued. But business lines are clearly flexing their muscles. It’s another strong signal that technology has shifted from a supporting function for business to a strategic asset.”
