Business Process Management: A Tool for Building Better Processes and More Effective Communication and Collaboration

By Dick Weisinger

Business process management (BPM) is a methodology for organizing, tracking and automating an organization’s workflow effectively and efficiently.  Chief benefits of the use of BPM are speedier execution of processies, reduced human error, and reduction of miscommunication.

E. Scott Menter, vice president of business solutions at BP Logix, agreed saying that BPM is not just a back-office technology used for improving internal processes. “The truth is, the technology gives you a lot more than that.”  It can help customers, partners and suppliers both better communicate and collaborate.

Keshav R Murugesh, CEO if the WNS Group, said that “the BPM industry has demonstrated resilience in the face of economic uncertainty by constantly re-inventing itself to meet market needs, and is now forecast to touch $50 billion by 2020 from the present $21 billion.  While BPM 1.0 in the late nineties was centered on cost efficiencies and productivity, BPM 3.0 in late 2000 focused on specialization, process re-engineering, technology-enabled platforms. I believe that the era ahead is that of clients and providers working together even more closely on disruptive innovations.”

Patrick McLendon, manager of systems and programming at Vulcan Materials, told CIO, that “anybody in a mid-sized to large company, like us, who isn’t doing this now needs to be on it.”
