Cloud Computing: 5 Cloud Trends
Over the last 13 years since Amazon released the Elastic Compute Cloud, cloud computing has reshaped the landscape of IT departments. Today’s businesses are pushing the capabilities of the cloud as they attempt to transform themselves into ‘digital businesses’.
What trends can we expect for the cloud going forward?
5G Edge Assists. This years marks the beginning of the rollout of 5G. 5G will enable many devices that have been at “the edge” or have been distantly located so that standard network connections have been difficult or not feasible. 5G will provide a way for ‘distant’ devices to be able to connect and transmit data.
Cloud to enable Digital Transformation. Enterprise software vendors will push cloud solutions. Dave Bartoletti, Forrester analyst, said that “in 2019, cloud computing will be shorthand for the best way to turn disruptive ideas into amazing software.”
Cloud Interoperability and Portability will be Key. Businesses will want to avoid lock-in with a single cloud vendor. They’ll also want data to be able to flow between multiple cloud apps potentially hosted by multiple cloud vendors. While the cloud opens up new opportunities, it also makes interoperability and integrations more difficult.
Cloud Spending to Spike. Businesses have made their decision about the cloud. Most want to migrate their legacy applications to the cloud and that will translate into an acceleration of spending on cloud applications and services.
Increased Focus on Cloud Security. Poor cloud security can lead to issues with cloud control and management. In order to secure their data, businesses will better invest in security and begin to better incorporate a security mindset in all stages of application development
