Cloud Computing and Security: Survey Points to Massive Confusion
The number one concern that people cite when discussing the cloud is security. Forrester is predicting a huge turn around in this attitude by 2015 when Forrester thinks that people will consider cloud computing more secure than on-premise system. At this point though we’re pretty far from realizing that prediction. A new survey by Courion Corporation drills down into the specifics about what makes people worried about security in the cloud.
Some of the many worrying numbers that come out of the report include:
- 78.4 percent of companies say that they don’t know who is ultimately responsible for the security of their cloud-based solution, an alarmingly high number
- 61.2 percent say that they don’t know which systems that users have access to.
- 64.3 percent say they aren’t confident that terminated employees are no longer able to access their systems. Many companies admit that part of their problem is that “zombie accounts” remain active after a user leaves the company which can lead to data breaches
- 48 percent say that they aren’t confident that if a compliance audit of their system would discover no inappropriate accesses
- Worries about internal versus external security threats are fairly mixed. 56.5 percent say that worry of an external threat to their system is greater than the worry about an internal threat.
