Cloud Computing: Businesses Diversify their Cloud Portfolios

By Dick Weisinger

Businesses continue to increase their investments in the cloud.  A recent survey by RightScale investigates the extent to which the cloud is being used.

The RightScale survey divided their respondents into four groups:

  • Cloud Beginners (26 percent) – Businesses just getting started with their first cloud projects
  • Cloud Explorers (23 percent) – Businesses that have implemented some cloud projects
  • Cloud Focused (26 percent) – Businesses that have fully adopted the cloud and consider it a transformative business strategy
  • Cloud Watchers (17 percent) – Businesses drawing up strategies with no projects yet underway
  • Non-Cloud (8 percent) – Businesses for reasons of skepticism or cost have opted not to use or consider the cloud
The top benefits realized by using the cloud were ranked as follows
  • Faster access to infrastructure
  • Greater scalability
  • Faster time to get applications to market
  • Higher availability
The RightScale survey also found that large organizations tend to diversify their cloud portfolio.  47 percent of larges businesses say that they have a hybrid cloud strategy that makes use of both public and private cloud services and applications.
