Cloud Computing: Huge Growth in Public Cloud Service and Infrastructure Spending

By Dick Weisinger

Which industries are adopting the public cloud?  A report from IDC finds that discrete manufacturing, professional services, and banking are the leaders. Industries where the spending growth is the greatest include media, retail, and telecom.  The US is still spending the most globally.  IDC expects that US spending on the cloud will equate to about 60 percent of global cloud spending through 2021.

The most likely area where the public cloud is being used by industries is for customer service, sales and new projects.  Legacy company-critical apps have been the laggards when it comes to moving to the cloud, often because those apps may be the result of years of customizations that are difficult to move to cloud apps or because there are concerns about moving highly sensitive data to the cloud.

In 2017 public cloud services and infrastructure spending is expected to be about $128 billion, an increase of 25 percent compared to 2016.  And by 2021, public cloud spending is expected to reach $266 billion.
