Cloud Computing: Many Trust, but how Can they Verify?

By Dick Weisinger

“Trust but verify” — it is a phrase used by Ronald Reagan in his nuclear weapons negotiations with the former Soviet Union.  It’s actually a Russian proverb, and it is increasingly being used to describe how businesses should approach their dealing with cloud vendors.

Businesses are putting great trust in their cloud vendors.  To secure their data, to ensure up time, and to maintain their reputation.

Gavan Egan, managing director of cloud at Verizon, said that “the biggest risk is giving up control of your data to someone else using different data centers in remote places. What happens in the event of a disaster? You’re also putting your data next to someone else’s.”

Kamran Ikram, managing director at Accenture, said that “you can’t assume anything – it’s still your data and you are responsible for it.”

Egan asks “do they understand the regulatory requirements governing payment card or health data, for example. And can they prove that they can do what they say they can do?”
