Cloud Computing: Network Traffic Expected to Surge Because of Increase Cloud Usage

Businesses are seeing the benefits of using the cloud.  The cloud is more scalable and able to sustain a wider range of workflows that the traditional on-premise model.  This is driving a rapid migration to the cloud.  By 2020, Cisco predicts that 92 percent of business workflows will have migrated to the cloud. Further, Cisco estimates that cloud traffic will increase by 3.7 times from 3.9 zettabytes in 2015 to 14.1 zettabytes by 2020.

Doug Webster, vice president of service provider marketing, said that “the IT industry has taken cloud computing from an emerging technology to an essential scalable and flexible networking solution. With large global cloud deployments, operators are optimizing their data center strategies to meet the growing needs of businesses and consumers. We anticipate all types of data center operators continuing to invest in cloud-based innovations that streamline infrastructures and help them more.”

Other predictions Cisco estimates will occur by 2020 include:

  • Network traffic will surge because of increased growth in cloud usage
  • Collaboration workloads will account for about one-quarter of business workloads.
  • IoT will account for about 22 percent of total business workfload.
