Cloud Computing: Prices Fall and Competition Heats Up
Cloud computing is getting cheaper. The cost of renting virtual machines (VMs) from vendors like Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google have been dropping for some time. Now additional service pricings are dropping too. 451 Research noted that the price of object storage is rapidly being cut by the major cloud vendors.
Jean Atelsek, an analyst at 451 Research, said that “the big cloud providers appear to be playing an aggressive game of tit for tat, cutting object storage prices to avoid standing out as expensive.”
451 Research expects pricing in areas other than VMs and object storage to drop next, for example, database usage.
Owen Rogers, a research director at 451 Research, told Computer Weekly that “object storage is a good place, in the context of cloud, to put big blobs of data just while you’re working on processing them, completely unstructured and non-databased. Just throw your data on there and pick it up when you need it,” .
