Cloud Computing: Security isn’t a Problem, but Using Clouds in a Secure Way Is

By Dick Weisinger

The market size of the cloud services sector is expected to increase 17.2 percent in 2016 from $178 billion last year to $208.6 billion this year, according to a recent third-quarter report by Gartner.  Businesses are primarily being driven by cost savings derived from offloading workloads to third-party cloud vendors.

Sid Nag, Research Director of Gartner, said that ”growth of public Cloud is supported by the fact that organizations are saving 14 per cent of their budgets as an outcome of public Cloud adoption.”

Ed Anderson, Gartner research vice president, said that “public cloud services offered by the leading cloud providers are secure. The real security challenge is using public cloud services in a secure manner.  More education is needed to help organisations overcome the hype associated with the security concerns. This should be a key area of focus for providers in working with their clients to unlock the benefits of public cloud services.”

But like anything, the implications and applications of cloud services need to be done carefully.  Angelo Di Ventura, director at end to end technology provider Trustmarque, said that “it’s important CIOs are able to retain visibility over the cloud services in use throughout the business. In particular, if left unchecked, easy to purchase SaaS services can cause considerable disruption.”
