Cloud Computing: The Security Advantage of Public Clouds Over Private Clouds

By Dick Weisinger

The ability for a company to effectively secure their private cloud IT infrastructure is directly proportional to the company size. Smaller companies just don’t have enough of the right skills and resources.

A report from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace found that “very few organizations can rival the security teams of the large CSPs and are therefore better off entrusting their security to these external teams. This does not mean that the cloud is secure, but it is more secure relative to the security measures most organizations could otherwise achieve… From Alex Stamos, who served as Facebook’s former chief information security officer (CISO), to the CISO of a large financial institution, technical experts agree that the security provided by major CSPs is significantly better than most organizations can achieve themselves.”

What security advantages do private public clouds have over private clouds?

  • Hardening. Public cloud vendors have weathered daily hacking attempts for years and have learned how to defend against it.
  • Quality of Security IT support. Large public clouds are able to attract the best security talent.
  • Investment in best security hardware and software. Public clouds make strong investments to stay up to date and use the most advanced security technology.

Why does private cloud security typically lag public cloud?

Overly Focused on Firewall. Too often private clouds put the bulk of their security focus on keeping intruders out by focusing on the firewall and DMZ. There is less focus on email and the internet.

Older technology. Updating security technology is a never-ending expense. It is hard to keep up with software patches and refreshes of out-dated hardware.

Security IT Support. Attracting quality security personnel and keeping them up-to-date with training can be expensive and a big effort to manage.
