Cloud Computing/SaaS: Worldwide Growth of SaaS Market Continues

By Dick Weisinger

Worldwide spending on the SaaS market is expected to grow at the rate of 17.9 percent during 2012, reaching $14.5 billion by the end of the year.  By 2015, SaaS will become a $22.1 billion market, a number which was revised upwards by nearly $1 billion from last years forecast.  That’s the estimate of analyst firm Gartner.

Sharon Mertz, research director at Gartner, said that “After more than a decade of use, adoption of SaaS continues to grow and evolve regionally within the enterprise application markets.  Increasing familiarity with the SaaS model, continued oversight on IT budgets, the growth of platform-as-a service (PaaS) developer communities and interest in cloud computing are now driving adoption forward.”

The Gartner report broke down SaaS spending by region, determining that:

  • The North American SaaS market now stands at $9.1 billion, up more than 16 percent from $7.8 billion.
  • In Western Europe, SaaS spending is at $3.2 billion, up from $2.7 billion in 2011.
  • In Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, SaaS revenues will be $934.1 million, up from $730.9 million.
  • In Japan, SaaS brings in $495.2 million, compared to $427 million in 2011.
  • In Latin America, SaaS spending totals $419.7 million, up from $331.1 million.

Nathan Marke, CTO at IT Services company 2e2, commented that “The challenge for organisations going forward is to ensure their network infrastructure continues to evolve to meet these growing SaaS demands. They must also be able to manage these services effectively alongside the on-premise services they use.”
